Behind the Food Truck: How House of Tiffins Went From Dream to Bay Area Staple

Every great restaurant begins with a story. Ours begins with a dream, a family kitchen, and the unwavering belief that authentic South Indian food deserved a home in the Bay Area.
The Dream
House of Tiffins was founded by me (Suppraja), an immigrant woman entrepreneur who grew up deeply connected to the food traditions of South India. The flavors of my childhood- the tang of freshly made sambar, the crisp of a well-fermented dosa, the warmth of a bowl of pongal on a winter morning - were not just memories. They were an inheritance I felt compelled to share.
The Bay Area, with its large and growing South Asian diaspora and its culture of adventurous, health-conscious eating, felt like exactly the right place to bring that vision to life. In 2024, House of Tiffins opened its doors.
Why a Food Truck
The food truck was not just a practical starting point- it was a philosophy. A food truck is mobile, community-driven, and accessible. It does not ask you to dress up or make a reservation. It meets people where they are. For me, that spirit of accessibility and community was at the heart of what House of Tiffins was always meant to be.
The food truck quickly became a destination in its own right, drawing long lines and loyal regulars who returned week after week for their dosa fix.
Growing Into a Brand
What began as a single food truck has grown into a full ecosystem. House of Tiffins now operates a dine-in restaurant inside the San Jose Downtown Food Hall, serving guests throughout the week. The catering arm of the business brings live dosa stations and beautifully packaged South Indian spreads to corporate events, weddings, and private celebrations across the Bay Area.
Under the House of Tiffins brand, we have also developed sister concepts including Indian Crepe Co. and The Sandwich Sabha- expanding the vision of what Indian food can look like in an American context, without ever compromising on authenticity or quality.
What Has Not Changed
Through all of this growth, the things that matter most have stayed constant. The food is still made fresh every day. The recipes are still rooted in tradition. The team is still deeply passionate about the craft of South Indian cooking. And the mission - to bring wholesome, authentic, millet-forward food to the Bay Area community- remains unchanged.
House of Tiffins is more than a brand. It is a community. And we are just getting started.
